Oral submucous fibrosis is a distinctive fibrosis of the oral mucosa occurring in the western Pacific basin and south Asia among persons whose diet is heavily seasoned with chili or who chew betel, a compound of the nut of the areca palm, the leaf of the betel pepper, and lime.[1]:610
